My mom is da mom. She never had another life, like my dad, who was probably secretly a gung fu action hero spymaster assassin before he was a dad. She was always a mom—she was practically born that way—but that’s okay. (from Alvin-Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things by Lenore Look)

I know this is the third time I’ve used this quote, but it’s the one I feel speaks the most to who I am at this stage in my life. I’m just a mom. I don’t remember ever having another life. Motherhood is just who I am. I thought for our anniversary week, I’d let you in on a little bit of who I am by sharing twenty random facts about me.

1. I live in a mid-sized west Texas town. I’ve lived here forever. My family has lived here forever. We don’t plan on moving ever. I genuinely feel sorry for people who have never tasted Bluebell ice cream or really good Mexican food. If you came here to visit and I really wanted you to understand about my town, I would take you to a high school football game.

2. Anne of Green Gables is my favorite book. My husband and I took a trip to Prince Edward Island on our first wedding anniversary so I could enjoy all of the beauties of the setting of that book. I hope to be able to take my children to the settings of their favorite books….unless they take place on other planets. Then I’ll have to get creative.

3. The thing I’m most afraid of is loss. But I’m also kind of afraid of birds.

4. The thing I’m most embarrassed about is that I didn’t go to college. Almost all of my best friends have masters degrees, PhDs or MDs. My husband has a degree in Biblical text. Someday I hope to get a degree in history.

5. My husband and I own a landscaping and irrigation business. It is extremely hard work to own a business.

6. I am a fledgling user of both Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace system and Marla Ciley’s Flylady system. I am a work in progress.

7. I have a really good memory for quotes both in books and movies. I can recall an appropriate quote from something I’ve seen or read for almost every conversation I’m in. I often refrain from doing this or intentionally fudge on a quote so people won’t think I’m a nerd. I’ll say, “I can’t remember the exact wording. It’s something like…” But I really can remember the exact wording. And I can quote an astonishing amount from FRIENDS and You’ve Got Mail.

8. When I was a teenager I thought I wanted to be a missionary when I grew up. I was going to go to Romania and work with orphans. I think I would really like to go with my children on short term mission trips someday.

9. My favorite sound is that of biting into a really crisp apple. I really like Pink Lady and Fugi apples, but Honey Crisp are the best, hands down.

10. Sometimes, like when my house is really messy, I fantasize about checking into a nice hotel just so I can rest in a clutter-free place where someone else makes the bed.

11. I love dasies and roses. All kinds of dasies, all colors of roses.

12. I started collecting baby names in pencil on the back page of my DayRunner when Jon asked me to marry him. Benjamin was one of the names I penciled in.

13. I actually crave the ocean. I miss it so much my chest hurts sometimes. My family always used to vacation at South Padre Island, but we haven’t been in seven or eight years now. I want to see Benjamin play in the surf, to teach him how to make a good sandcastle, to let him string shells on fishing line to make a necklace for me, to show him how to send his footprints to the other side of the world…

14. I am really good at making pies. I do not like to cook but I love to bake.

15. If I die young, I plan to have my organs donated. If I die old, I’d like for my body to be donated to a medical or physical therapy school. I think it’s just amazing that we have options like this in this century.

16. I do not own an ipod.

17. I want to be a children’s book author. When I was seven I wrote my first book, a pop-up book titled Wolves I Have Known.

18. Whenever I write overtly Christian blog posts, I fear people will stop reading because they do not share my faith. But it is so much a part of who I am that I cannot not include Christ in my posts. I hope the readers of this blog are never offended by this.

19. I love it when people comment on blog posts. Especially when strangers comment.

20. You can read more about me and my family on my personal blog www.hidemyselfinthee.blogspot.com though I do not update it very often.
