I feel that as long as the Shire lies behind, safe and comfortable, I shall find wandering more bearable: I shall know that somewhere there is a firm foothold, even if my feet cannot stand there again. (from The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkein)
Since I’m leaving for Boston tomorrow, I’ve been spending much of this week savoring my home town. I’ve eaten at all of my favorite local restaurants, I’ve enjoyed time with friends and family, and I’ve enjoyed riding my horses. And it has been wonderful! I’ve loved every minute of the time I’ve spent soaking up this place that is safe and comfortable, and now I feel fortified as I wander far from home. I’m glad that this place has been my home for so long. I’m glad to have a firm foothold in the world.
